Hey everybody!

What amazing weather we are having at the moment!

It certainly has been making athletics much more enjoyable. On Tuesday, Miss Parkes and I were managing the shuttle run and it was great to see children pushing themselves and working hard as a team. I know that everyone was exhausted and very thirsty at the end of the lesson-signs of dedication!

I would like to say a huge well done to Omer and Faraaz for their contribution to class discussion during Literacy this week. We have been using mind mapping, drama, illustrations and character profiling to help us to understand the personalities of the children in our class novel ‘There’s Boy in the Girls Bathroom.’ I have been impressed with how empathetic and sympathetic members of our class have been.

Here are some opinions from members of our class,

Bismillah: “The novel is fun, but Bradley is so moody!”
Rejah: “Interesting, full of comedy. Bradley is a bully but at home he is a joy.”
Ali: “Funny, exciting and surprising!”

Finally, some top notch mathematicians during MATHS WEEK. I was thrilled to see year 6 children and year 5 children working together as a mock council. Children had to decide where their council’s budget was to be spent. It was a tricky task that required good negotiation, communication and addition skills against the clock. Well done guys!

I’m sure we will all rooting for England this Sunday during the match!  Have a great weekend guys!

Mr McCabe

In Literacy 6P have been studying the novel Boy Overboard, sof ar we have been getting to grips with the SETTING. We have looked at the differences between the place where Jamal and his sister live and where children at Birchfields live. Jamal lives close to the Afghan dessert in a place of conflict. He sees tankers, troop carriers, debris and destruction all around him. His world is often dangerous.

During BIG WRITING children practised their LETTER WRITING skills and wrote to Jamal and Bibi to find out more about their lives. They also had to INFORM Jamal and Bibi of life in Manchester by DESCRIBING their own way of life, family and hobbies.

We have started STORY MAPPING some of the chapters from the novel in order to highlight important events in the PLOT.  The story is full of exciting incidents and tension!

Hey everybody

In PSHE we have been looking at how we can cope when we are worried or stressed. Children had to pretend that they were agony aunts and agony uncles (in place of trusty old Denise robertson) who were responding to people’s stressful problems. Many of the children in our class were very sensitive, empathetic and helpful. Jhoti gave some particularly useful advice to a girl who was being teased for loving football. Jhoti reassured her that she was lucky to have a special gift and that she should be proud. Well done!

Well done to Amba’s group in gym to day. They managed to create some very controlled balances on the equipment by stretching their arms, pointing their toes and remaining focused. They worked sensibly and safely…great work folks!

Hey! This term in Topic our investigation question has been… DO MY EYES DECEIVE ME?
So far in the topic we have looked at how they eye works. We know that the pupil lets light enter our eye. The lens is where images are focused. The optic nerve carries messages from the eye to the brain where they are processed. There were lots of scientific words and lots of functions that we had to remember. We then looked at eyewitness testimony and how leading questions can trick you into thinking you have seen things that you haven’t.

We also investigated the possibility that people on earth have seen UFOs floating through the skies. We read a testimony and unpicked some of the parts that we thought were unbelievable. We discussed the possibility of paranormal activity, had a visitor who claimed they are haunted by a ghost came in to see us and wrote a recount of a trip to Borley Rectory. (Supposedly the most haunted house in Britain).

We looked at all sorts of wacky and crazy optical illusions and learned about how the brain is tricked by shapes, colours and lines that can often make us think we are seeing multiple images. The class have found out more about blindness and partial sight. By watching a video about a boy who used his ears and special technology called echo location to understand the world around him. We tried a blindfold task, some people had to butter bread, sort shapes and put water in glasses- IT WAS HARD! We researched information about guide dogs and Braille.

We looked at eye diseases like Glaucoma and Trachoma and how they were easily spread in poor countries. In Bangladesh we looked at a boy who was having cataract operation through a charity. We looked at Cuttlefish they could change colour, texture and shape of their body to fit in with their environment too! Many animals camouflage to deceive predators and prey to increase their chance of survival. Coming up next we will be debating…can wearing glasses be cool? and we will be looking at how what we see at the cinema has changed. EXCITING STUFF!

Today 6P worked together to tell each other why they think everyone is a ’star’. Everybody worked hard to think of lovely comments they could say about all the class. I hope you all keep your sheets to remind you of the stars you are.

Miss Parkes

Welcome back after half term everybody! Is it just me or did it wizz by?

Before half term 6P were writing stories in the genre of FANTASY. Everyone worked exceptionally hard. We did lots of descriptive writing activities and some shared writing…but when it came to independant writing my goodness the stories were simply fantastic. Everyone had used a great deal of description, detail, superb language choices and every story was well structured. The BEST thing was the fact that everyone had let their imagination run wild. Saqulain, Jhoti, Arash, Arisha and Ali had particularly awesome stories so very well done to you!

Remember to use all of the tips and tricks everytime that you write.
Mr McCabe

At this moment, I’m sat with Hamza, Saqlain and Ibrahim S who told me that I should write about their website which they are creating using Microsoft Power Point, all about our topic which is vaccinations. Saqlain says the whole things is OK and Hamza tells me that their webpage has  a home page and links. Ibrahim S just wants to say hello to you all.yh g

Miss Parkes

Not the NICEST topic but just ask 6P for any advice or the pros, cons or history of vaccines.

What a coincidence…..6P were learning about money last week and after Friday’s lesson are THE people to ask if you need a party planning in a budget!…but ALSO Miss Parkes is learning a new dance in her tap dancing class to the song “we’re in the money”.
